I’m finally back in Johannesburg after a busy (but utterly fun) vacation in Cape Town. I loved being back in my hometown. Apart from all of the beach action, Nic & I were lucky enough to be invited to sample the rather legendary Saucisse Deli breakfasts. I’m such a sucker for eggs – scrambled, poached, fried. There was no way I was missing out on this. We opted for breakfast on the 31st of December. Our last morning meal of the year. It simply had to be delicious. It had to be.

Saucisse, French for “little sausage” (the name alone had me) is owned & run by Amanda & Derrick Lewis – a dynamic food-loving, father, daughter duo. Saucisse sits pretty in the heart of Woodstock at The Biscuit Mill. This family-run speciality meat & cheese deli has been keeping loyal customers happy for the past six years & has a knack for drawing in new Saucisse-loving patrons. The deli focuses on local ingredients from the many knowledgeable local producers in both the Western Cape region & throughout the rest of South Africa. Apart from whipping up delicious plates of delicious things, Amanda also has a passion for ethical eco practices in her store. Yes.

So what was on the menu for our very last breakfast of 2015? I opted for the Breakfast Sandwich – fried egg, crispy bacon, roasted cherry tomatoes, fresh red onion, sweet milk cheese, basil pesto & rocket. AMAZING. YUM! AMAZING. A fried egg (cooked perfectly), sticky & sweet tomatoes. It all just works. Nic was lured in by the Saucisse Benedict –  soft poached eggs, Hickory ham, caramalised onions & the house Hollandaise sauce, served on sourdough with fresh rocket. Ok… a quick moment has to be dedicated to those caramalised onions… Nic’s word… “Wow”. The sweetness of the onions with the creaminess of the (again, perfectly made) Hollaindaise sauce – why is nobody else doing this? Actually, who cares, the caramalised onion / Hollandaise combo could be one of the reasons Amanda’s cooking is so well-loved by the Cape Town (& now Joburg) masses.

Saucisse is teaming with local cured meats, cheeses, fresh artisanal breads, juices, olive oil & vinegars. If you aren’t in the mood to sit & eat, simply select a host of gourmet goods, have them wrapped in brown paper & create your own platters at home – easy & utterly delicious. Beautiful free-range duck eggs are also on offer, for those morning moments when only a duck egg omelette will do.

Amanda & Derrick are always around to offer advice or simply explain where your chosen ingredients come from. I love that personal touch. So was I happy that my final breakfast of 2015 was at Saucisse Deli? Happy, oh so happy.
