Many would believe that being the most non-foodie “foodie” in Jozi Town is rather easy, a walk in the park, a breeze. It isn’t, it really isn’t. My line of work as a food stylist & writer & the general theme that my work revolves around means that whether I like it or not, I have to pay some attention to the latest food trends. It’s a given that a curt nod towards the sometimes nonsensical food chatter happening around me is necessary.
Life enjoys throwing rock hard lemons at us, making things a tad difficult at the best of times, why would I want what I put in my mouth to be part of that chaotic nature? The fact is, I wouldn’t & I don’t. Things should be easy. Perhaps I am slightly cynical towards what the food scene has become of late but that’s my own burden to bear. Don’t get me wrong, when I find something or somebody in the food world that I take a hard liking to, I lap up their cookery shows & take note of just how many coriander leaves they adorn their meals with. But simple & real still remains the key element when it comes to food – in my opinion anyway. That’s why I get happy when the Sanlam FoodWineDesign Fair hops into town – a place where products & producers don’t need to say all that much – products, design & food are what they are & speak for themselves. Yes.
Food is on the cards, of course it is, along with wine, craft beer & gorgeous design in the shape of local inspired decor. I won’t say more than that, below is just a few of the best of what SA & Jozi has to offer. Who could resist a nibble & a tipple on a warm, Jozi summer evening, on the Hyde Park rooftop? Not many…
