There’s always that one restaurant you drive past on most days & think, “I’ve heard good things about that place, I should try it out”. But you never do because, well, life happens. Most Joburgers love a good sushi spot. Most Joburgers love great seafood. A restaurant that specialises in sushi & seafood – well that’s a win. Lobster Trap in Bryanston invited Nic & I to try their sushi & seafood. It didn’t disappoint.
The menu boasts a fish tank (ha) full of choices. From sushi (naturally), to classic fish & chips, seafood curries & fresh oysters. So much choice. I actually had to close my eyes & point. Sushi had to be an option, it had to be. Spicy Tuna California Roll & a Rock ‘n Roll California Roll – gorgeous. The sushi is fresh & made to order (you’d be surprised how many places don’t do this), with a dedicated sushi chef behind the bar. We also opted for a portion of the crispy deep-fried squid heads… Touchy order for me, I always order the heads (I LOVE them) & it’s (the same word again) *always* a bit of a letdown. Lobster Trap serves theirs with a side of tartar sauce… BEST CRISPY SQUID HEADS IN JOBURG – I could easily have ordered a second plate. Honestly, I wouldn’t even bother with the sauce – a squeeze of fresh lemon is all that’s needed (& is supplied on the plate).
We could have happily just eaten another portion of sushi but we wanted to see what the warm meals were like. A classic fish & chips plate always lures me. A crispy & rather thin batter coats a fillet of fresh hake (flaky & moist) & the chips. Those chips. Hand cut *proper chips*. I said, hand cut, proper chips. Delicious. Nic did actually tuck into another portion of sushi (it was that good).
So if you’re looking for a new local sushi joint, then head into the Bryanston neighbourhood. The staff are just so lovely & professional, the wine & beers are cold & if you’re really lucky, you’ll even get a Highveld thunderstorm thrown in while enjoying your meal. If you have a sweet tooth there are several puds on offer.
