A weekend ago we were invited to sample the new Al Fresco Brunch Boxes being served up by Tryn restaurant at Steenberg. I say we because it was a family outing & the children were very much invited too. Now despite all of the 2020 pandemic scares – we have been incredibly cautious this year & have only recently started stepping out to select spots. My Covid-19 anxiety lessened slightly knowing that we could dine outside, away from crowds, while still being able to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Steenberg & the wonderful spoils from Tryn.
As Cape Town does, the wind was gusting in small but rather obnoxious bursts but did eventually ease off – not that we were put off by the blustery antics. Upon entry to the beautiful Steenberg estate, we were provided with a picnic blanket & Ash & Romes made a beeline for the traditional lawn games on offer – I love a bit of analogue downtime (says she who was happily snapping away). The staff were all masked (a necessary detail to add these days), with sanitiser on hand and & all Covid-19 protocols being followed. Once happily seated on the lawn, under a tree, with the children amusing themselves, a box appeared. WHAT WAS INSIDE IT?!
I do love a surprise, especially one with nibbly bits. And this certainly was a nibble-filled Al Fresco Brunch Box (R295, serves 2):
- A little Charcuterie Board: a selection of meat & cheese
- Fruit (grapes, strawberries)
- Mini pastries (Danish, croissants)
- Olive bread & bread sticks
- Granola, yoghurt & compote pots
- Fresh Orange Juice
- Some sald bits to add to those sandwich bites that were created with bits of meat & cheese (Rosa tomatoes, fresh rocket)
- Freshly baked muffins (which were ammmaaaaazing)
The Kiddies Box (which is a separate order, R100, serves one):
- Ham & cheese wrap
- Fruit
- Brownie
- Juice
Oh it was lovely, it was so lovely to be outdoors, away from people while still enjoying a delicious spread & with enough space for the children to run freely without being “shushed” every two minutes. The staff were also super accommodating to the little ones. The food really was delicious. I love a good picnic spread & thought this was well worth the price. Chef Kerry Kilpin & her team really created something not only delicious but utterly fun for the entire family to enjoy – a definite weekend entertainment idea, especially with the festive season holidays approaching.
After a load of nibbling & running around (we finally tired those two out) & after many attempts to keep mom & dad from leaving… It was decided that we will be returning for another Tryn Box, perhaps the next one will be the Lunch Box – yes, they have lunch sorted too.
We were lucky enough to be invited to Tryn at Steenberg & thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We will certainly be back with one or two friends who are happy to social distance under the trees. A good few hours spent outdoors, with the children having a run-around & best of all – no picnic baskets to lug about or plates to clear up afterwards – bliss! Thank you Chef Kerry & the wonderful Steenberg team for hosting us, we cannot wait to return!
Side note: All boxes are available on a pre-order basis & are required to be ordered a day in advance.
We were graciously hosted by Steenberg, however all views & opinions are my own.
Happy Al Fresco Daze x
